The city of St. Clair Shores is officially the first city in Michigan to take advantage of a law introduced in July 2016 that allows local governments to make facility improvements leveraging flexible financing programs that are not considered debt. Through the Tax-Exempt Lease Purchase (TELP) program, St. Clair Shores will partner with Johnson Controls on city-wide upgrades, including HVAC, building automation, lighting, and water improvements.

U.S. Rep. Trey Hollingsworth, Indiana 9th District, visited the Geo-Flo plant in Bedford, Indiana, on April 21. Discussions included the state of the geothermal heat pump industry, as well as Geo-Flo's encouragement to support H.R. Bill 1090, which would extend the tax credit for investments in energy property with construction that begins before January 1, 2022.

Heating, Air-conditioning and Refrigeration Distributors International (HARDI) sent letters of support to Sens. Rob Portman, R-Ohio, and Heidi Heitkamp, D-N.D., for introducing the Regulatory Accountability Act (RAA), which would rein in the excessive rulemaking authority of federal agencies.
It would be fair to say the geothermal industry is at a bit of a crossroads. Despite being around for more than 30 years, the math says it accounts for less than 1 percent of the HVAC market. And, for the first time since 2007, geothermal contractors are out in the market selling their residential products without a 30 percent tax credit.
