Engineers and contractors have difficulty implementing GeoExchange systems when a building has a significant load imbalance due primarily to the significant cost increase of the ground heat exchanger. When this occurs, often GeoExchange is dismissed as a viable option. Another option is a hybrid system that typically involves a cooling tower coupled to a ground heat exchanger. The hybrid configuration can often reign in the installation cost by as much as 50% while only increasing the long term operation cost by 5-10% on average. This balance often changes an LCCA payback from 12+ years down to within 5-8 years, or better.
