Bill BahnflethNewly installed ASHRAE president Bill Bahnfleth speaks about this year’s ASHRAE Annual Conference; what his plans, vision, and goals are as the society’s president; and more.

Q: You were just installed as ASHRAE president. How much of an honor is it to serve in this capacity?

A: It’s certainly a highlight of my professional career. You may or may not know, it was a particularly special moment because my father was president in 1985 and 1986. This is the first time we’ve had a second-
generation president.

Q: What exactly is the ASHRAE president responsible for? What are your goals?

A: I’m sort of the top volunteer in the society. From an operational point of view, I chair the board and executive committee, working closely with the ASHRAE staff in Atlanta and Washington, D.C. Most visibly, the president serves as the face of the society for our chapters, regions, and for other organizations. I’ll probably be traveling more than 200 days this year, visiting other organizations and chapters. Our theme is “Shaping the Next: Our World, Ourselves, and Our Work.” The key is focusing ASHRAE on embracing our responsibility to our fellow humans and the planet earth. We have a really important job to make buildings safe, healthy, and productive environments.
