Editor’s Note: The following remarks were made onThe NEWS’group,The NEWSNetwork, on LinkedIn. These comments are on how sales of HVAC equipment on the Internet affects the industry.

It Hurts the Industry

Internet sales hurt the industry, since those units generally get installed by unlicensed and/or low-end contractors, or worse, by the end user.
Purchasing a piece of their [Goodman Manufacturing] equipment over the internet voids the warranty.

Don’t Warranty Units Installed by Just Anyone

With regards to the Internet … we are being cut out, and again, the people who are thriving are those who operate in the underground economy. No one can compete with others who do not pay insurance, take permits, pay workers’ compensation, etc. In fact, because we hold valid licensing and trade tickets, we are held to a higher standard than the low lifes.

No we do not need more regulation, we need to be a responsible industry and stop the warranty of all products not installed by qualified industry personnel. To date we are still refusing to install any product not supplied by us. We did not get into business to be labor brokers. If we are forced to in the future, then my guess is our labor rate will be similar to that of our legal counsel: $250.00- $300.00 per hour + consulting + ancillary items.
