Aaaaaachoo!

September 01, 2010

I feel sorry for my fellow editors on The NEWS this week. Unfortunately for them, I’ve caught a late summer cold.

Kyle Gargaro sits to my left, Angela Harris to my right, and Greg Mazurkiewicz and Cherie Preville are across the aisle. I’m sure all of them are sick of the nose-blowing, sneezing, and throat-clearing that’s coming from my cubicle. I swear that I’m not one of those martyrs who refuse to ever take a sick day. The problem is that I’m just barely sick, so I’m able to continue fully functioning at work, as long as I have a box of tissues close at hand.

Yet these cubicle walls are none too high, so I’m trying to keep to myself as much as I can. I’m not surprised when Kyle ducks past me and tries to stay out of my germ-emitting range.

And I’m not surprised that Angela only says “bless you” for about a third of my sneezes now. Did you know that a sneeze expels all the volume from one lung, comes out at about 100 miles per hour, and expels about ½ gram of fluid?

I learned all that and more from watching the latest YouTube video from RGF Environmental Group about its sneeze machine. RGF created a machine that replicates a sneeze to validate its claims that its air purifying products can effectively combat the spread of infectious diseases.

Check it out, and let me know what you think of this IAQ product.

Breathing in Hydrogen Peroxide

Are you sure you want to breathe that in? He states... it's "like misting the air with hydrogen peroxide". Here's some info on hydrogen peroxide... "Inhalation and ocular exposure of household strength hydrogen peroxide (3%) can cause respiratory irritation and mild ocular irritation, respectively." I would like to see the concentration of hydrogen peroxide this is producing and compare it to health guidelines. I would also like to see how much ozone it is producing. Just some thoughts!

You already do breathe in Hydro-Peroxides every day you go outside! Typical levels of Hydro-Peroxides in the air of a city are around 1 part per billion (PPB) and in a forest they get up to around 4 PPB as per a published U.S. university study in China. The Guardian Air unit is going to deliver between 10 to 15 PPB in the air in your home and very effectively reduced microbes, gases and odors the same way that it naturally happens in outside air. That's one of the reasons outside air feels so "fresh" and spending a day outside is so rejuvenating to our bodies. Hydro-Peroxides are considered a friendly oxidizer, one of nature's purifiers, as it reverts back to oxygen and hydrogen after it oxidizes a pollutant. The strictest health guideline for Hydrogen Peroxide vapor is set by OSHA (Occupational Safety and Health Administration), and they recommend prolonged exposure not to exceed 1,000 PPB (or 1 Part Per Million). Even at the highest levels the Guardian Air puts out, the concentrations are only a fraction of that amount and very close to the natural levels that we see outdoors. The Guardian Air does not use ozone for purification. Many household appliances do create a very small amount of ozone as a by-product (such as: plasma TV's , computer monitors, hair dryers, some light bulbs, refrigerators, electric motors, copy machines, electronic air filters, air conditioners, electric fans, microwave ovens, etc.). Because our system uses a UV light, it also creates a very small, safe amount of ozone as a by-product. Typical levels are well under half of the EPA's suggested safe level, and these units are in full compliance with all safety codes. RGF units have been tested for ozone, EMF and electrical safety. RGF Environmental Group is dedicated to making the best products on the market, and we extensively test everything we manufacture to both the highest quality and safety standards in the industry. See our test summary website link at http://www.rgfairpurification.com for more details on testing and efficacy of our units.

At a city building we had tried numerous combined RGF units in order to control odor. Total Failure
