Transportation Amendment Aims for Safety

OTTAWA, Ontario - According to the Heating, Refrigeration and Air Conditioning Institute of Canada (HRAI), the Transportation of Dangerous Goods Act of 1992 (TDG) has undergone some changes by Transport Canada. The TDG regulation is aimed at elevating the level of safety on Canadian roads and has in turn had some diverse effects on the HVAC industry. Non-compliance to this regulation results in strict consequences to any person who handles, offers for transport, transports, or imports dangerous goods; or any person who sells or distributes standardized means of containment intended for the transportation of dangerous goods.

One of the key changes under this amendment is that the 150 kg Gross Mass Exemption portion of the regulation now permits contractors to transport most Class 2 gases and exempts dangerous goods handlers from the documentation, dangerous goods safety marks, means of containment, and training.
