Maryland recently became the first state to recognize geothermal heating and cooling as a renewable energy source. This has many leaders in the geothermal industry hoping this helps serve as a motivator to the other 49 states.

Nearly 250 manufacturers’ representatives, architects, and engineers participated in this year’s ClimateMaster national sales meeting, held recently at the Sheraton Oklahoma City Hotel in downtown Oklahoma City. 

An upgrade to the Envision® product line, the 5 Series delivers whole-home comfort. The 5 Series 500A11 combines forced-air heating and a/c and generates a portion of a home’s hot water. Available in nine single-speed and six dual-capacity sizes from 1 to 6 tons, the geothermal heat pump system uses R-410A refrigerant.

Featuring low-H2O technology that enables the unit to heat quickly, the Linea Plus radiator can be used with low-temperature hydronic systems and renewable energy sources such as solar or geothermal. The discreet design allows for pipes and vents to be completely hidden behind the front panel and cabinet.

The Econar® ColdClimate™ Series of geothermal heat pumps is designed to meet the demands of heating-dominant climates without sacrificing efficiency, said the company. The series features heat-cool balance and leaving air temperatures of up to 106°F. TruBalance™ technology regulates heating and cooling operation.

In HVAC terms, Malcolm Rowe may have the coolest home in Putnam County, N.Y. Rowe recently constructed a 5,800-square-foot residence boasting an immaculate energy envelope. The home, finished in July 2011, is Energy Star rated, EPA Indoor AirPLUS labeled, and is pending LEED accreditation.
