The old two-pipe, fan-coil system was struggling to keep up with cooling demand during Atlanta’s hot summers. So it was decided that the old fan-coil system would be replaced with water-source heat pumps, sized to handle the building’s 500- to 600-ton cooling demand.
There are times when the attempt to do something positive can result in something unexpected. The annual increase in the number of hard-start kits being added to air conditioners is a perfect example.
Cooling systems today collectively account for 17 percent of the electricity used worldwide, and 8 percent of global greenhouse gas emissions. These technologies could drastically reduce this.
