A thermostatic expansion valve (TXV) is designed to maintain a specific amount of superheat at the outlet of the evaporator. If the superheat value is too high or too low, the TXV may be the cause. However, before deciding the TXV is defective, all other system causes must first be investigated and ruled out.
Hospitals today are increasingly being challenged by rising patient infection rates, especially from superbugs such as Methicillin-resistant Staphylococcus aureus (MRSA). And the challenges are only going to increase as new Medicare rules go into effect in 2017 that will include MRSA in all reimbursement calculations.
Habits can be a trap for people in leadership positions. As leaders, they should provide a compelling vision that inspires those around them. Instead, many of them lapse into automatic thinking. And that can affect every decision they make — and the actions of the people who report to them.
Increasing emphasis being placed on life cycle costing studies as part of the decision-making process
April 4, 2016
BSRIA has launched its new Life Cycle Costing Guide, designed to present a simple process for the practical calculation of life cycle costs. It includes examples to show how the different stages of the process relate to one another, to show how the results are obtained and what they really mean.
Lynn Dison, an applications engineer at RAE Corp., shares the wisdom of six decades
April 4, 2016
Looking back on a refrigeration technology career stretching over six decades, Lynn Dison, an applications engineer with RAE Corp., said that he knew from the very start of it all that he would be at home in the industry for his entire career.
Bob and Tim had just finished a routine service call on a house with a gas furnace for the heating system. They were talking to the housewife when she asked: “Our house is very dry in the winter time, and the humidity must be very low. How can we put a system in this house to keep the whole house at a higher humidity level?”
It is my firm belief that airflow and air distribution is every bit as important in refrigeration design as load calculations. What good is a properly sized system that can’t deliver the air to areas that need it? Poor air distribution and airflow lead to stratification in temperature and humidity as well as poor heat transfer.
For employers, an increase in OSHA fines could be a costly problem, underscoring the importance of a robust and effective workplace safety policy. However, OSHA’s recent enforcement positions are creating confusion over how to implement an effective safety policy.
