There’s a Lot More to San Antonio Than the Alamo

EDITOR’S NOTE: What comes to mind when you think of San Antonio? History buffs will say the Alamo, where Davy Crockett, Jim Bowie, and a group of courageous Texans held off the Mexican Army under General Antonio Lopez de Santa Anna until the outnumbered Texans were finally subdued on March 6, 1836.

Sports fans will chant “Spurs” because of the NBA’s 1999 World Champion San Antonio Spurs, led by David Robinson and Tim Duncan.

Here’s another fact about San Antonio: The 2000 U.S. Census revealed that the city has grown 28% since the 1990 Census, a rise in population from 935,000 to 1.2 million. In that 10-year period, San Antonio has grown from the 10th largest city in the U.S. to the eighth largest. A lot of people are moving into town and taking up residence in existing housing.

On this page and page 46, The News takes a look at some contractors in and near San Antonio.

When The News asked area con-tractors about the new housing market in San Antonio, most said that it was not growing at any alarming rate. But what has been growing is the residential service market.

“The houses are getting older and the market is getting bigger,” said Dennis Molgaard Sr., former owner of Air Alamo Air Conditioning. “We are seeing more competition now in the residential service market.”

Jeff Beyer, co-owner of Beyer Mechanical, said the market is cyclical. “One year new construction is up and the next year it’s service. I think the new construction market is up right now.”

This report provides information for contractors living in the South/Southwest region of the United States. This includes Kansas, Oklahoma, Texas, Arkansas, Louisiana, Mississippi, and Alabama. If you have information from this region, please contact John Hall at 734-542-6214; 734-542-6215 (fax); or halljr@bnp.com (e-mail).
