Ontario Code Requires CO Detectors

August 16, 2001
ONTARIO, CANADA — The Ontario government has taken actions that would make carbon monoxide (CO) detectors mandatory in all new residential buildings that contain fuel-burning appliances or a garage.

According to the Heating, Refrigeration and Air Conditioning Contractors of Canada (HRAC), several municipalities have passed local CO detector bylaws.

The new amendment to the Ontario Building Code went into effect on August 6. The amendment expands the requirement for the detectors in new residential construction and establishes uniform provincial standards to provide for consistent application across all municipalities.
