On the Horizon

As the year turns, here are some highlights of upcoming events and projects.

CMX Planning Begins

TORONTO - The 2010 CMX/CIPHEX Committee held its first meeting in late October to begin work on the 2010 trade show. The committee consists of representatives from the Heating, Refrigeration and Air Conditioning Institute of Canada (HRAI) and the Canadian Institute of Plumbing and Heating (CIPH) and is chaired by Ed Seaward of Union Gas who chaired the 2006 and 2008 shows. The show will continue to be managed by Shield and Associates Limited.

The 2010 show will be held March 25-27, 2010 in the North Building of the Metro Toronto Convention Centre. Information on exhibiting in the 2010 show will be forwarded to previous exhibitors in early January 2009.

IAQ Study Underway

OTTAWA, Ontario - The National Research Council of Canada’s Institute for Research in Construction (NRC-IRC) with partners Institute national de santé publique du Québec (INSPQ), Health Canada, and others have launched a major IAQ improvement and research project. This project will include a field study in the homes of about 100 families with asthmatic children in the Quebec City area over the next two years.

To support the field study, a new Indoor Air Research Facility has been constructed on NRC’s Ottawa Campus. There, modifications for homes will be designed and tested to measure the impact of different strategies, including variable air tightness, flexible room size, various HVAC systems, and heat recovery ventilators.

HRAI Initiates Task Group

MISSISSAUGA, Ontario - Based on a recommendation from the August 2008 Heating, Refrigeration and Air Conditioning Institute of Canada (HRAI) meetings in Quebec City, the HRAI Manufacturers Division has initiated a task group to address current gaps in performance measurement of air purification equipment in the Canadian market.

A first teleconference of the group took place in late October and included HRAI members and guests from the National Research Council of Canada (NRC), which is also working on projects related to IAQ. The task group will review existing guidelines, standards, tests, and certification programs for both stand-alone air purifiers and products that are built into HVAC systems, including electronic devices (e.g., electrostatic, ultraviolet), and those using filter media. It is expected that the task group will work closely with related NRC efforts.
