In late March, instructors from around the country gathered at the annual HVACR & Mechanical Instructor Workshop. At the three-day annual event, which was hosted by the Air Conditioning, Heating & Refrigeration Institute (AHRI), they shared their experiences and brushed up on industry knowledge and skills.
SkillsUSA’s 47th annual National Leadership and Skills Conference shone a light on the nation’s best and brightest in various trades in Kansas City, Mo., June 19.
The demand for technology-driven education is rising, and many colleges and vocational schools are pushing their programs to find new ways to further incorporate technology and hands-on experience into instruction.
According to former student Joe Bates, “Mr. [Boyd] King lives and breathes HVACR. He really knows how to connect with students, and he will do anything he can to help a student.” And that helps to explain why The NEWS is honoring King as runner-up in the 2011 Best Instructor Contest.
While it’s true that Tom Kalber officially retired from Sacramento City College (SCC) this past May, he’s the kind of instructor who can’t just walk away. After teaching full time for 32 years, he has now transitioned to a role as an adjunct professor, and he continues to aid the students in his program.
For 2011, the Air-Conditioning, Heating, and Refrigeration Institute (AHRI) and The NEWS are honoring Scott Naill as the HVACR Best Instructor. He has been teaching for 17 years at the Upper Valley Career Center, and his commitment to go the extra mile for his students and his program set him apart from the crowd.
HVACR industry trade shows are a wealth of information for all members of the trade, from manufacturers to suppliers to contractors. Shows are also a great way for newcomers to the trade – such as vocational students – to learn about the industry.
These comments concern whether there’s a huge need for new, skilled employees, and what individuals have done to promote HVAC as a career to high schoolers.
