An HVAC technology developed by researchers at the U.S. Department of Energy’s (DOE’s) National Energy Technology Laboratory (NETL) has won one of this year’s R&D 100 Awards. The winning technology is called “HVAC Load Reduction Technology for Commercial Buildings.”
Boston Properties Inc., a real estate investment trust, and co-development partner, Hines, announced that Salesforce Tower is now the tallest building in San Francisco and will soon be the tallest office building west of Chicago. It features an HVAC system that will distribute outdoor air to each floor.
Although its genesis occured more than 60 years ago, the threshold of what IAQ can do for the average HVAC company hasn’t been crossed by many. The industry is estimated to exceed $5 billion in revenue within the next four years. This is an opportunity that shouldn’t be passed up.

The IAQ market in the U.S. totaled $7.8 billion in 2015, is forecast to reach $8.3 billion in 2016, and grow to $10.8 billion by 2021, increasing at a compound annual growth rate (CAGR) of 5.3 percent from 2016 to 2021, according to a report from BCC Research.
