The Air Conditioning Contractors of America (ACCA) will proudly appoint Laura DiFilippo as national chairman during its 44th annual conference and expo, March 5-8 at the Paris Hotel in Las Vegas.
I’m not sure many people in the HVACR industry started 2012 with a New Year’s resolution that went something like, “I want to be totally confused over the cost and availability of R-22.”
The economy has been tough for many HVAC contractors over the last few years, and the signals are mixed as to whether things will get better in 2012. On the positive side, construction employment rose in 28 states and the District of Columbia between December 2010 and December 2011. On the other hand, only 302,000 new homes were sold in 2011, which is 6.2 percent below the 2010 figure.
The NEWS interviewed three contractors from around the country who are involved in high-performance building projects to find out more about their experiences.
The Mechanical Contractors Association of Chicago (MCA Chicago) is urging Illinois legislators to restore the Illinois Mechanics Lien Act to its original intent, reversing an Illinois Supreme Court decision that limits a contractor’s ability to collect on work performed for properties that end up in foreclosure.
The first comment is in response to Peter Powell’s editorial “Is A/C to Blame for D.C.’s Mess?” in the Feb. 6 issue. The second concerns what contractors are doing about the rising cost of gas.
Contractors across the nation are finding that although the HVAC industry has experienced change in the recent economic crisis, its need for skilled labor and certified technicians has not been completely abated by the influx of displaced workers from the economic downturn. Other trade industries have noticed this problem, too.
