The American Society of Heating, Refrigerating, and Air-Conditioning Engineers (ASHRAE) has published Guideline 12-2000, “Minimizing the Risk of Legionellosis Associated with Building Water Systems.”

According to David Geary, chair of the guideline committee, the guideline specifies environmental and operation guidelines for the safe operation of building water systems to minimize the risk of Legionnaires’ Disease.

“The bottom line is we can actually prevent illness and save lives,” said Geary.

Guideline 12 provides design/ control measures for sources where Legionella can bread, including potable water systems, cooling towers, heating spas, and architectural fountains. Contractors, designers, installers, owners, operators, maintenance personnel, and equipment manufacturers can use the guideline, he said.

For more information regarding the guideline, contact ASHRAE customer service at 800-5-ASHRAE, or online at ASHRAE is based in Atlanta, GA.
