Circulators, Control Panels, and Pumps

By Joanna R. Turpin
February 16, 2009
Taco displayed its new Variable Speed Delta T Circulators, which automatically adjust to deliver optimal heat transfer.

CHICAGO - Hydronic systems can require a number of different parts, and many of these items were displayed at the 2009 International Air-Conditioning, Heating, Refrigerating Exposition (AHR Expo).

Armstrong (www.armstrongpumps.com) highlighted its new Pump-in-a-Box, which makes commercial pumps available for shipment within 24 hours. The Pump-in-a-Box offering includes a broad range of Armstrong pumps including the 4360, 4380, and 4380 IVS Series Vertical In-Line. The Pump-in-a-Box offering also includes the newly introduced IVS Sensorless pump, which is the only true plug-and-play intelligent variable pump available on the market today. The Armstrong IVS pumps can replicate a typical variable-speed system, without the added cost and complexity of installing a remote pressure sensor.

ITT’s Bell and Gossett Division (www.bellgossett.com) and McDonnell & Miller Division (www.mcdonnellmiller.com) displayed many new products. Bell & Gossett expanded its line of 3-Speed NRF wet rotor circulators for domestic hot water and closed-loop heating systems. The new model NRF-25 and NBF-25 circulators are equipped with 3-speed motors, which allow the pumps to cover a wide range of hydraulic capabilities. The B&G Division also announced the availability of an upgraded Technologic® constant speed pump control panel.

The control panel is designed to control both open (pressure booster, cooling tower and processes) and closed (heating, cooling, and other HVAC system) loop applications. McDonnell & Miller introduced its new GuardDog® RB-24E low water cut-off for residential hot water boilers, as well as a new line of ZoneSmart™ pump controllers that are ideal for zoning with circulators in residential and light commercial hydronic applications.

Taco (www.taco-hvac.com) introduced a number of products, including the VT Series short set vertical turbine pumps, which are designed for use in water supply/transfer applications. Applications include condenser water, chilled water, water transfer, pressure boosting, and water supply.

Also featured were new Variable Speed Delta T Circulators, which automatically adjust to deliver optimal heat-transfer based on the actual operation of the system on a continuing basis - under all load conditions. Its all-in-one design combines a microprocessor-based variable-speed differential controller with the reliability and convenience of 00® cartridge circulators. The new Variable Speed Solar Control Circulator continuously optimizes water flow through the solar collector to achieve maximum energy gain. This new offering combines the advanced features of Taco’s external speed and solar controls with the reliability and convenience of the dependable 00 cartridge circulator. All wiring for power and sensors is done directly to the circulator, while the LED status panel makes it easy to check functionality. Dip switch-based user configurable settings allow a fast set-up, regardless of the solar application.

Also highlighted was the revolutionary new FloPro Designer Software - available to Taco FloPro Team members - which is the fast, easy, and smart way to design a hydronic system from the ground up. The FloPro Designer software makes heat loss calculation fast, easy and, most importantly, accurate. And it also helps design any type of residential hydronic system - baseboard, radiators, fan coils, and radiant.
