MISSISSAUGA, Ontario - The Heating, Refrigeration and Air Conditioning Institute of Canada (HRAI) released the 2010 update on the Canadian CFC chiller stock study. This update estimates that 253 chillers previously operating on CFC refrigerants were converted or replaced during 2010 in Canada. This represents a 3 percent decrease in conversions/replacements compared to 2009.

HRAI also conducted an informal survey of chiller service contractors in early 2011 to compare the remaining CFC chiller stock estimates from the original study with actual estimates from the field. Based on this survey, it appears the original estimate for CFC chillers still operating in Canada as of Dec. 31, 1995, was overstated. Because of this, the estimated number of CFC chillers in Canada as of Dec. 31, 1995 has been revised accordingly.

The conversion and replacement numbers for 2010 bring the total number of converted or replaced chillers from 3,135 (2009) to 3,388 and the rate of conversion/replacements from 71.5 percent (2009) to 77.2 percent. These numbers are based on the new baseline number determined in 2011 which updated the HRAI study, entitled “Determining a Baseline Number of CFC Chillers in Canada,” published in July 2000.

The purpose of the program is to provide an ongoing estimate of the number of chillers in Canada that continue to operate on CFC refrigerants and track the annual rate of conversions and replacements of this chiller stock in future years. The estimated remaining Canadian CFC chiller stock in Canada is 998.
