DARTMOUTH, NS, Canada — Refrigerant Services Inc. has announced that its HFC refrigerant RS-24, which works with mineral oil, has received approval from the U.S. Environmental Protection Agency (EPA) under the Significant New Alternatives Program (SNAP).

The refrigerant is used as a retrofit for systems originally designed for use with R-12. According to the company, its makeup includes “a small amount of a specially formulated hydrocarbon component that provides enhanced oil return capabilities.”

The company noted that SNAP approval will allow the product to be brought to the United States. Company officials said the refrigerant is still awaiting designation from the American Society of Heating, Refrigerating, and Air-Conditioning Engineers (ASHRAE).

Refrigerant Services also has an HFC refrigerant called RS-44, designed for use with mineral oil in R-22 systems, which the company is planning to bring to the U.S. in the future.
