Embraco is field testing CO2 compressors in several applications to offer an HFC-free alternative without the flammability risk associated with HCs like propane, according to the company.
CHICAGO - Today's commercial refrigeration market is demanding higher efficiencies, quieter compressors, and even non-HFC alternatives, according to the manufacturer Embraco, which is responding to those demands with its NT and variable-capacity compressor (VCC) models, as well as CO2 prototype decks.

"The NT compressor family is very much at the forefront of compressor technology for commercial refrigeration," said Dave Sylves, OEM sales manager for Embraco North America. The NT compressors are rated from 1/3 to 1 hp today and will be extended to 1-1/2 hp later in the year.

"This new family of compressors boasts an improved efficiency of 15 percent over the T-Series it replaces while reducing sound levels by 5 dB," said Sylves. "This makes the NT Series ideal for ice maker and food service applications, where high efficiency and low sound are specified by the end user."

VCC

The VCC was displayed in two pieces of equipment during the recent International Air Conditioning, Heating, Refrigeration (AHR) Expo in Chicago. Those were a Dixie Narco beverage vending machine and a Perlick combination beer-and-wine cabinet. The VCC operates from 1,600 to 4,500 rpm, changing speeds according to the load, the company said. After a rapid pull down to the desired temperature, the compressor slows down to an optimum rpm level that minimizes energy consumption while maintaining a precise temperature, Sylves said, adding that the Dixie Narco VCC vendor saw more than a 35 percent energy reduction as compared to a single-speed compressor.

CO2 FACTOR

Sylves also said Embraco is field testing CO2 compressors that offer an HFC-free alternative without the flammability risk associated with hydrocarbons (HCs) like propane. Two different CO2 decks were displayed at the Chicago expo.

"Embraco has manufactured condensing units for years, but this new deck is another in a new line of complete sealed systems offered by the company," he said. "We are working closely with key end users like Coca-Cola, McDonald's, Unilever, and Nestlé, as these companies are demanding an HFC-free solution for their future refrigeration needs."

He noted that Embraco encourages its customers to develop environmentally friendly refrigeration systems. The Embraco Ecology Award forms part of an educational program for schools and universities that promote environmental awareness and protection.

The manufacturer's largest plant and headquarters are in Brazil. The other plants are located in China, Italy, and Slovakia. Embraco North America is located in the metropolitan Atlanta area.
