MT. STERLING, Ky. - In October 1964, A.O. Smith, responding to changes in the domestic air conditioning industry, opened a new plant in Mt. Sterling, Ky., to make hermetic motors for residential applications. Recently, employees, retirees, local officials, and special guests celebrated the 40th anniversary of the facility.

In a letter to employees, chairman and CEO Robert O'Toole commented, "Since beginning production in October 1964, you have made numerous contributions to A.O. Smith and to our many air conditioning and refrigeration customers. Your dedication to quality and customer service is one of the reasons why A.O. Smith is a leading supplier to the North American hermetic motor industry. ... You have worked together as a cohesive team since 1964, and it is that ability that has helped you respond to the many changes in this highly competitive industry."

Edward O'Connor, vice president of human resources and public affairs, presented the facility with a commemorative plaque marking its 40 years of service to the hermetic motor market.
