CHANTILLY, Va. — The Sheet Metal and Air Conditioning Contractors’ National Association (SMACNA) will offer two educational sessions addressing protection from mold litigation and solutions for mold prevention during its 60th annual convention. The convention will take place Sept. 28 – Oct. 1, 2003 in Washington, D.C.

“Mold Litigation: A Prevention Plan” will examine the extent of the mold dilemma and identify bid and contract options to minimize or eliminate a contractor’s potential liability. The session will also address design materials, building maintenance, employee training, and conclude with recommendations for developing a mold prevention program.

The second educational session, “Mold and Moisture Control,” will provide an engineer’s perspective on what mold is and an explanation of why it is a problem and a risk for building owners.

Practical approaches to preventing mold and recommendations on what building owners should do if mold is detected will be presented. According to SMACNA, contractors will learn the basics about fungi and bacteria, explore why managing moisture is crucial to controlling mold, and examine practical ways to control moisture inside buildings.
