LAS VEGAS — What can you do to maintain consistent quality of work? What can you do to control jobsite material costs? What can you do eliminate jobsite material storage and theft?

Those participating in an Oct. 1 optional tour during the Plumbing-Heating-Cooling Contractors-National Association (PHCC) annual convention will learn how a PHCC company in Las Vegas has developed one solution to all four problem areas. The tour is sponsored by the Union-Affiliated Contractors (UAC), an enhanced service group of PHCC.

The featured company will be Desert Plumbing & Heating Inc., of Las Vegas. Participants will learn ways pre-fabrication has helped Desert Plumbing control productivity issues and material costs, and remain competitive in the marketplace. In some cases, Desert Plumbing’s effective pre-fab planning and implementation have involved assembling water systems at the pre-fab shop, transporting them by truck to the jobsite, and then hoisting the materials from the truck onto skids that take them to the various floors of a Las Vegas building.

Some of Desert Plumbing’s recent jobs include:

  • Mandalay Bay Hotel Casino;

  • Expansion of the Mandalay Bay Convention Center;

  • Tower Room addition to the Mandalay Bay Hotel Casino (under construction);

  • Monte Carlo Hotel Casino;

  • Expansion of the Las Vegas Convention Center; and

  • 50-story Turnberry High Rise Condominiums (under construction).

    The tour will be held from 7:30 a.m. to 9:45 a.m. on Wednesday, Oct. 1, at Desert Plumbing, which is located about three miles from PHCC’s headquarters hotel, the Luxor. Trips to an actual jobsite also may be included, schedules permitting.

    At the same time, UA Local 525 will sponsor a tour of its training center. The tour will be held 7:30 a.m.-9:45 a.m., Thursday, Oct. 2.

    The 36,000-square-foot, two-story training center is currently under construction, with a target completion date of Oct. 1, 2003. The state-of-the-art facility will contain, in addition to classrooms and labs, a 3,000-square-foot teleconferencing center to facilitate the United Association’s distance learning program.

    The Mechanical Contractors Association of Southern Nevada Inc., a UAC-affiliated association, and UA Local 525 have joined forces to provide the $6 million expansion of the existing apprentice and journeymen training center, located at 750 N. Lamb Boulevard, Las Vegas.

    The UAC-sponsored tours are open to all PHCC convention attendees.
