SACRAMENTO, CA — California Association of Sheet Metal and Air Conditioning Contractors National Association (California SMACNA) presented the 2002 Tom Guilfoy Memorial Architectural Sheet Metal Award to San Diego Sheet Metal Works for its project (“Concourse C”) in the Portland International Airport in Portland, OR.

The Guilfoy Memorial Architectural Sheet Metal Award was established in 1996 to recognize the California SMACNA company whose project best epitomizes the quality and craftsmanship of architectural sheet metal work set by Guilfoy Cornice Works.

San Diego Sheet Metal Works was also the first winner of this award in 1997 for a project (“Highway 110 Bus Station”) in Los Angeles.

In accepting the award, San Diego Sheet Metal Works president Karl LePiane said, “As you described the work involved in the project, I thought it was ours, but then you said it took 20,000 man-hours to complete, and I can tell you we didn’t bid 20,000 man-hours. This was a hard project but a good one.”

The project involved work in fabricating, shearing, forming, laser cutting, water-jet cutting, welding, grinding and polishing, as well as powder coating and plating. Many types of metal were used, including stainless steel sheet and plate, aluminum sheet, plate and tube, powder-coated steel sheet, copper sheet, bar and tube, as well as glass and acrylic. The specific items included stainless steel fins, tapered arms and aluminum louvers at the security canopy, tapered column covers, stainless steel awning and light fin, louvers at the curtain wall, light fixtures, aluminum louvers at the exterior curtain wall, and miscellaneous column covers, cladding, and trim.

According to California SMACNA, this project was ultimately chosen because of the various items that were fabricated, the variety and complexity of the project, the craftsmanship involved, and the different types of metal used.

Cimco Air Conditioning & Sheet Metal, Inc., in Santa Fe Springs, received an honorable mention for its project (“Remodel of the Sherman Oaks Galleria”) in Sherman Oaks, CA.

Cimco fabricated, installed, and caulked all the panels in the project. The welding, grinding, and finishing were substantial, especially all of the radius panels which had to be fabricated in five pieces, all welded and ground. According to California SMACNA, Cimco’s project was selected because of its workmanship and details required in the project.

Weiss Sheet Metal, Gardena, CA, also contributed to the project.

Next year’s award will be presented at the 37th annual convention, to be held at Marriott CasaMagna in Cancun, Mexico, on April 23-26, 2003.
