ATLANTA, GA — In the first update since placing its energy standard on continuous maintenance, the American Society of Heating, Refrigerating and Air-Conditioning Engineers (ASHRAE) has published ANSI/ASHRAE/IESNA Standard 90.1-2001, “Energy Standard for Buildings Except Low-Rise Residential Buildings.”

According to ASHRAE, the standard provides the minimum requirements for the design of energy-efficient buildings and incorporates 34 new addenda. “This is the first time changes resulting from continuing maintenance proposals from the public have been included in the standard,” said Lawrence Spielvogel, chair of the standard committee. “The committee welcomes input from the public and will take formal action on every proposal received.”

The standard is now scheduled to be published in its entirety every three years. This will allow ASHRAE to meet the deadline for inclusion or reference in model building and energy codes, according to Spielvogel.

The new standard contains the entire 1999 version, along with 34 new addenda. The addenda cover the building envelope, hvac, and lighting, as well as the energy cost budget method, administration, and enforcement. Other notable changes include incorporation of errata and a revised forward.

Once approved, addenda, errata, and interpretations to the standard can be downloaded for free from www.ashrae.org (website).
