TORONTO — ecobee has announced the introduction of its ecobee3 smart Wi-Fi thermostat with wireless remote sensors. The company said the thermostat and remote sensors measure temperature and occupancy in multiple locations, resulting in increased comfort when the user is at home and energy savings when they’re away. In addition, customers can monitor and control their ecobee3 thermostat anytime and from anywhere, using their smartphone, tablet, or computer.

“The industry has seen the introduction of new thermostats that seem modern but have the same flaw that thermostats did 50 years ago — they only measure the temperature in one location, often the hallway. The ecobee3 thermostat and remote sensors resolve this fundamental design flaw and deliver comfort in the rooms that really matter,” said Stuart Lombard, co-CEO at ecobee.

According to the company, the thermostat and remote sensors address varying temperatures in the home, and will improve comfort and deliver energy savings right out of the box. ecobee said customers can save an average of 23 percent on their heating and cooling costs.

Working with its remote sensors, ecobee3 recognizes which rooms are occupied and automatically adjusts the temperature based on the readings in those rooms. When the homeowner leaves the house, the sensors will recognize this and prevent the heating and cooling system from running unnecessarily when the home is empty.

The thermostat’s DataRhythm™ technology uses thousands of data points to automatically make intelligent and personalized heating and cooling decisions to save money on energy costs, improve the home’s heating and cooling performance, and make the homeowner more comfortable.

Smart Home Recovery is an algorithm built into the thermostat that determines the best way to bring the home to the desired temperature at the right time while also minimizing HVAC equipment use.

The ecobee3 thermostat constantly monitors HVAC system performance and will send an alert if anything is not working or is working sub-optimally. Similarly, ecobee3 can send reminders to change filters, have equipment serviced, and more.

The thermostat has a sleek black finish with rounded edges and a 3.5-inch capacitive touchscreen display with newly designed user interface that features intuitive iconography and controls that navigate like a smartphone.

The ecobee3 smart thermostat with remote sensors will be available in the United States and Canada for $249 beginning Sept. 29, 2014, through www.ecobee.com, www.amazon.com, or through HVAC contractors.
