ARLINGTON HEIGHTS, Ill. — Intertek announced that its Code Evaluation Services have been granted accreditation by the International Code Council’s (ICC’s) International Accreditation Service (IAS). Intertek has maintained accreditation as a product certification agency under ISO Guide 65 for a number of years, but now the company is accredited to provide code evaluation services as well.

Evaluation service accreditation has historically been voluntary; however, some regulatory bodies are now mandating that product certification agencies comply with ISO Guide 65. With the accreditation of its Code Evaluation Services in place, Intertek said it is now positioned to meet the needs of its clients in jurisdictions throughout the United States.

“Accreditation is crucial in being able to demonstrate the competence and independence of our operations,” said Michael Beaton, P.E., Intertek’s director of product evaluations. “The IAS assessment was rigorous and thorough, and we are proud to have achieved this important credential.”

Intertek said building departments use its research reports to approve the products and systems being used in their jurisdictions. Manufacturers, in turn, look to agencies like Intertek to provide third-party validation that their products comply with the code. For many products, a research report is an efficient way to present the information the building departments need. If the research reports are to be accepted, they must be by certification agencies that are trusted and widely recognized. IAS accreditation provides the credentials that help to ensure an agency’s certification marks will have full acceptance in the marketplace and by governmental agencies that regulate product acceptance.

Gavin Campbell, Intertek’s global senior vice president, Building Products, said, “The IAS accreditation gives building departments and our customers confidence that Intertek Research Reports can meet their high expectations for quality and integrity. This achievement is perfectly aligned with Intertek’s goal of removing potential barriers and helping manufacturers get their products to market.”
