It is important to keep HVAC equipment clean so it runs efficiently and as it’s designed to run. One place where dirt and grime collects in HVACR equipment, affecting system efficiency, is in the coils.

Goodway Technologies’ CoilPro CC-400HF ensures clean commercial evaporator and condenser coils. Timothy Kane, president, of Goodway Technologies, said the idea behind the product was to create a cleaner that is “easy to use, operates efficiently, and caused no coil damage.”

Coil Cleaner

According to Goodway Technologies, the CoilPro CC-400HF coil-cleaning system is designed to safely clean thick, single, or multi-pass evaporator and condenser coils up to eight thick. Weighing in at 40 pounds, the unit can be toted around to clean commercial rooftop units.

The coil cleaner’s pump system offers the best of both worlds when it comes to cleaning coils — pressure and water volume. The CoilPro HiFlow delivers 400 psi at 3.0 gpm.

“This perfect ratio of water flow and pressure allows contractors to deep clean coil up to 8-inches thick quickly, without concern for damaging sensitive coil fins,” said Kane.

The roll-cage design protects critical system components, shields the coil cleaner while it is being moved, and allows the ultimate in portability for busy contractors that need to get on top of condensers, rooftops, and more, added Kane.

The CoilPro CC-400HF offers several attachments including a 12-foot-long hose. For ease of portability, the tools and hoses can be carried to the job site using the tool caddy connected to the cleaner.

Up on the Roof

While Clean Air Quality Service Inc., Hawthorne, N.Y., hasn’t been using the CoilPro CC-400HF for long, Lou Doro, vice president of the mechanical contracting and HVAC service company, said his staff puts it to work every day. “The techs will complain if the Goodway CoilPro is not available because it not only makes their jobs easier, but they are able to reduce the downtime of the equipment being serviced, which ultimately makes the customer very happy.

“It permits the technicians to properly clean the coils without having to remove the condenser fans, which allows us to service the equipment during normal working hours instead of performing the work on overtime due to the extended labor involved,” he said. “The customer appreciates this because the occupants never even realize that the equipment was taken offline.”

Doro said that with the coil cleaner, more equipment is serviced each day and decreases the number of technicians needed to service large-sized equipment. “This ultimately allows us to keep our costs stable so that we can pass the savings on to the customer.”

James DeMarco, chief engineer, Monday Properties, New York, a property management company, said he’s used the product for one season and it has been used to clean 31 air-cooled units, which get cleaned more than twice a year. He’s especially fond of the unit’s portability, low pressure, and high flow rate, which make cleaning coils quicker and easier.

Liquid Desiccant Rooftop Unit

The Liquid Desiccant Rooftop Unit by Advantix Systems is a rooftop air conditioning system that uses liquid desiccant technology: a nontoxic lithium chloride solution (salt water) that removes humidity from the air without overcooling. According to the manufacturer, the liquid desiccant acts as a natural disinfectant and improves IAQ by removing approximately 91 percent of airborne microorganisms and 80 percent of particulates larger than 5 microns in a single pass. It does not exit the equipment and does not need to be replaced. The factory-assembled, single-piece system’s galvanized steel wall envelope design operates using electricity alone, so it doesn’t require other hookups or condensate removal systems.

Rheem Prestige™ Series Line of High Efficiency Commercial Package Units, Models RKRL-H, RLRL-H

The Rheem Prestige™ Series Line of High Efficiency Commercial Package Units are rooftop units that are available in 7.5-, 10-, 15-, and 20-ton sizes. The “-H” models in this line feature variable-frequency drive (VFD) technology. According to the manufacturer, the units are ideal for any commercial setting that has heavy air conditioning demands, such as restaurants, health clubs, schools, hotels, and more. Products in this line achieve efficiencies up to 13 EER. All major compartments can be accessed from the front of the unit, including the filter and electrical compartment, blower compartment, and outdoor section. The ClearControl system includes a rooftop unit controller — a solid-state, microprocessor-based control board that provides flexible control and extensive diagnostics for all unit functions.
