BALTIMORE — Johns Hopkins Hospital has completed a massive $1.1 billion expansion project that included the construction of two 12-story towers — the Sheikh Zayed Tower for cardiovascular and critical care and the Charlotte R. Bloomberg Children’s Center for pediatric care. It is the largest clinical building of its kind in the United States with 1.5 million square feet.

Sheet Metal and Air Conditioning Contractor’s National Association (SMACNA) contractor United Sheet Metal Inc. (USM), Capitol Heights, Md., used four million pounds of galvanized and stainless steel sheet metal for the HVAC systems, more than 14,000 linear feet (2.65 miles) of linear diffuser and custom distribution plenums, and collaborated with other trades on this enormous three-year project. USM installed more than 12,000 air devices; 19 custom air handling units; 90 exhaust, return, and supply fans; and 3,300 variable air volume boxes for supply, return, and exhaust.

The expansion, including the two connected towers, occupies five acres and comprises 17 levels, and was designed to enhance the patient’s experience and take the next step forward in shaping medicine for the next century. The new hospital has a main entrance larger than a football field, 560 patient rooms, including both acute and intensive care, 33 state-of-the-art operating rooms, and a new emergency department.
