Residential A/C Shipments Jump in Third Quarter

MISSISSAUGA, Ontario — The Heating, Refrigeration, and Air Conditioning Institute of Canada (HRAI) announced its third quarter 2012 shipment numbers with residential air conditioning shipments showing the highest product sector gain with a 19 percent increase compared to the third quarter 2011. Residential furnace shipments also showed growth with a 2 percent increase.

Other product categories showed declines. Ductless splits shipments decreased by 24 percent, chiller bookings decreased by 21 percent, air-handling unit shipments decreased by 10 percent, unit heater shipments decreased by 8 percent, and commercial air conditioning shipments decreased by 6 percent.

Complete third quarter 2012 shipment numbers are:

• Residential air conditioning shipments increased 19 percent from 57,345 in the third quarter of 2011 to 68,517 in the third quarter of 2012. Year-to-date shipments increased 3 percent from 197,772 for the 3rd quarter 2011 to 203,378 for the 3rd quarter 2012.

• Residential furnace shipments increased 2 percent from 85,602 in the third quarter of 2011 to 87,307 in the third quarter of 2012. Year-to-date shipments increased 5 percent from 201,970 for the 3rd quarter 2011 to 212,439 for the 3rd quarter 2012.

• Ductless split system shipments decreased by 24 percent from 16,392 in the third quarter of 2011 to 12,492 in the third quarter of 2012. Year-to-date shipments decreased 10 percent from 78,016 for the 3rd quarter 2011 to 69,922 for the 3rd quarter 2012.

• Chiller bookings decreased 21 percent from 213 in the third quarter of 2011 to 169 in the third quarter 2012. Year-to-date shipments decreased 8 percent from 712 for the 3rd quarter 2011 to 655 for the 3rd quarter 2012.

• Air-handling units shipments decreased 10 percent from 533 in the third quarter of 2011 to 481 in the third quarter 2012. Year-to-date shipments increased 8 percent from 1,423 for the 3rd quarter 2011 to 1,542 for the 3rd quarter 2012.

• Unit heater shipments decreased by 8 percent from 10,794 in the third quarter of 2011 to 9,932 in the third quarter of 2012. Year-to-date shipments increased 4 percent from 21,149 for the 3rd quarter 2011 to 21,947 for the 3rd quarter 2012.

• Commercial air conditioning shipments decreased 6 percent, from 11,511 in the third quarter of 2011 to 10,835 in the third quarter of 2012. Year-to-date shipments increased 3 percent, from 28,735 for the 3rd quarter 2011 to 29,581 for the 3rd quarter 2012.
