Nov. 30, 2012: Onset Introduces Green Roof Monitoring System

BOURNE, Mass. — Onset, a leading supplier of data loggers, has introduced the HOBO® Green Roof Monitoring System for measuring the performance of green roofs. Designed to provide reliable performance in harsh rooftop environments, Onset said the 15-channel system enables users to quickly and easily monitor green roof conditions.

According to the company, the system provides:

• All the common green roof measurements: temperature, relative humidity, wind, soil moisture, light intensity, and rainfall.

• Plug-and-play sensors that enable fast, easy deployment.

• 24/7 web-based access to data.

• Trend logging, monitoring, and alarm notifications.

The HOBO Green Roof Monitoring System includes a U30 GSM-cellular data logger, smart sensors for measuring rainfall, soil moisture, soil temperature, solar radiation, air temperature/relative humidity, wind speed and direction, as well as mounting brackets and a 6-Watt solar panel. Optional mounting, additional sensors, and graphing and analysis software are also available.

In 2003 we started standardized green roof research in the US utilizing ONSET because there was not much choices on the American market. Accordingly these systems were very expensive, only moderate reliable and the support to choose the right components or for configuration purposes was horrible. With this experience we recommend to Universities or other researchers different options. Meanwhile there are many for this type of research that are much more cost efficient. However the question remains how much green roof research needs to be done since all results to this point confirm prior research and they are equivalent to research done in Germany during the last 3 decades?
