AHRI Releases Low-GWP AREP

ARLINGTON, Va. — The Air-conditioning, Heating, and Refrigeration Institute (AHRI) has released the interim report of its Low Global Warming Potential Alternative Refrigerants Evaluation Program (Low-GWP AREP).

The report provides an update on the current status of the program, and illustrates the estimated GWP values and safety classifications of the potential replacements for R-22, R-134a, R-404A, and R-410A. The program includes compressor calorimeter tests, system drop-in tests, and soft optimized system tests. Tests are ongoing and are expected to be completed by the end of 2012, and a report will be released publicly in 2013. AHRI launched the industry-wide cooperative research program to identify and evaluate promising alternative refrigerants for major product categories, including air conditioners, heat pumps, chillers, water heaters, ice makers, refrigeration equipment, and transport air conditioning and refrigeration equipment. AHRI said it is grateful to industry supporters — including 18 experts who provide technical guidance, 21 international and domestic universities and laboratories, and six chemical producers — who have contributed expertise and resources to the program using their own resources, at their own expense.
