Letters From Our Readers: Sept. 17, 2012

Editor’s Note: The following remarks were made on The NEWS’ group, The NEWS Network, on LinkedIn, about ventilating in commercial ductless applications.

Bring in the Fresh Air

I would think that you would treat it like any other [type of equipment application] based on occupancy and mechanical cooling determining the amount of fresh air.

The how-to can be done in various ways. A single powered fan and drop could make it easy. Fresh-air makeup through the roof via a hood could do it, too. It is really up for grabs how. I would definitely say there has to be fresh air though.

Ventilate No Matter the System Type

To directly address mechanical ventilation, we ventilate buildings no differently than any other building via a dedicated ventilation system and supply the airflow based on the codes and requirements. In commercial applications, we can throw into that CO2 sensors and go with a mixed approach; one we ventilate based on the code and the other we ventilate in excess of that based on occupancy loads. The issue is that all buildings need to be ventilated regardless of the system.
