Mitsubishi Electric Airs Heating Debate

SUWANEE, Ga. — Well known for disagreeing on almost everything, media personalities James Carville and Mary Matalin have been seen on TVs across the country battling over whether to keep their traditional cooling and heating system on a comfortable temperature, or one that saves money.

In the TV spots, a Mitsubishi Electric Cooling & Heating ductless HVAC system is shown as the solution for homeowners who want to cut electricity costs and increase comfort.

The spots debuted Aug. 27 and continued to run on CNN, Fox News, ABC, and CBS during each party’s convention nights.

One of the spots for Mitsubishi Electric shows cost-conscious Matalin telling comfort-focused Carville that he can change the thermostat if he can say “New Orleans,” instead of the native New Orleans pronunciation of “Nawlins.” The other spot shows them verbally battling by using references to famous quotes.

When Carville asks Matalin why she changed the temperature, she responds, “I thought you were for change.” He snaps back, “The issue in this house is my comfort.” Matalin fires back, “It’s the energy bill, stupid.”

The TV spots take Mitsubishi Electric’s “Split Personality” campaign to the next level. In earlier commercials, a single homeowner battles his or her alter ego between being comfortable or saving money.

“We knew, taking our ‘Split Personality’ campaign from showing one homeowner battling with his or her alter ego to a couple battling each other, we had to find spouses who truly served as each other’s opposites,” said Joe Mastroianni, chief marketing officer for Mitsubishi Electric Cooling & Heating. “Carville and Matalin not only top the list of great couple debaters, but they’re also entertaining to watch and naturally laugh-out-loud funny.”
