safety award presentationW.J. Maloney Plumbing, Heating & Cooling has been recognized with a Best of the Best Award for safety from SCF Arizona for the second consecutive year. The Phoenix plumbing, heating and cooling contractor was honored for being among the top 120 companies in a pool of nearly 25,000 businesses.

Kathryn “Kitty” Maloney-Langmade, president of W.J. Maloney Plumbing, Heating & Cooling, said having a full-time safety director demonstrates direct results.

“While everyone wants a safe job site — most companies our size do not employ a full-time safety director,” Maloney-Langmade said. “It is a clear advantage for us when large general contractors compare our safety levels with those we compete against. A safe work environment takes a commitment from everyone in the company and that translates well to the training and craftsmanship our team brings to each job.”

Skip Martinkovic is W.J. Maloney’s safety director.

He said the evaluation criteria for the award included loss records, claims reports, financial reporting records, loss ratios and E-MODS (experience modification ratings). W.J. Maloney ’s E-MOD rating is .84.

Don Smith, president and CEO of SCF Arizona, said, “A good safety record is no accident. Companies that focus on safety are making a good investment in their businesses. Our objective is for workers to be safe on the job; that’s what we are about. And the best defense is prevention — reducing risk and stopping injuries before they happen.

“The award-winning companies have made a commitment to keeping their workers safe on the job and the payoff is not only financial, it is emotional,” Smith added.

SCF Arizona is the leading provider of Arizona workers’ compensation insurance.
