compressorDesigned for high-efficiency heat pump and air conditioning systems, the new Copeland Scroll® variable-speed compressor allows heat pumps to achieve 13 HSPF, 20-plus SEER efficiency, and 40 percent greater year-round energy savings than standard heat pumps, the company claims. According to the manufacturer, by maintaining capacity at low ambient temperatures, systems equipped with the variable-speed compressor deliver hotter supply air, a key need for heat pumps, and summer humidity control is significantly improved with up to 60 percent capacity reduction. The variable-speed compressor provides diagnostics and protection capabilities to improve ease of service and system reliability. Features include a centrifugal oil pump for oil delivery at low speed, brushless permanent magnet (BPM) motor technology for highest efficiency, and temperature sensing for Scroll and motor temp protection. Enabled via communicating system control electronics, the system provides percent speed signal to the motor control drive; the motor control drive converts ac line input to power the dc BPM motor; and the motor control drive protects the compressor and communicates diagnostics to the system control.
