Industrial Refrigeration Growth in China

The Emerson-Vilter refrigeration presence in China, as reflected in this facility in Shanghai, has grown with the acquisition by Emerson of Shanghai Well-Tech Refrigeration.

Emerson Climate Technologies has announced what it calls an “expanded presence” in China with the acquisition of Shanghai Well-Tech Refrigeration Systems Co.

“Many analysts agree that the Chinese industrial refrigeration market offers significant growth opportunity. By 2017, China’s cold chain is projected to grow to more than 5 billion cubic feet of cold storage space, surpassing the size of the cold chain infrastructure in the United States,” said Ram Krishnan, president of the refrigeration division of Emerson.

“Our recent acquisition of Shanghai Well-Tech Refrigeration has given Emerson a local presence in the market; one that enables us to leverage our brand awareness and technology advantage to support existing and new customers in the emerging market with energy efficient and reliable industrial refrigeration solutions.”

Further, Emerson noted it had gained industrial refrigeration expertise for that market from its 2009 acquisition of Vilter Manufacturing, which provides a line of compressors and packaged systems for industrial refrigeration, heat pump, and gas compression applications.

According to the company, “The acquisition (of Vilter) enhanced Emerson’s presence in the food processing and cold storage segments of the refrigeration market and has enabled the company to strengthen its overall position in the refrigeration industry.”

Emerson added that Shanghai Well-Tech Refrigeration provides packaged refrigeration systems and compressor units for a variety of industrial refrigeration applications, including in the food and beverage and cold storage markets. “Located in Shanghai, the company offers Emerson Climate Technologies localized manufacturing and product design capabilities to grow the company’s presence in the region,” Emerson said in a statement.

“This recent acquisition is positive news for China’s industrial refrigeration market and the companies within the region that utilize these systems,” said Teo Meng Chye, facilities manager of Micron Semiconductor (Xi’an) Co., Ltd., a current Shanghai Well-Tech Refrigeration customer that utilizes glycol chillers in its operations. “Emerson Climate Technologies’ established commitment to innovation, energy efficiency, and product design promises to further drive the growth and technological advancement of this emerging market.”
