LANHAM, Md. - Over 125 volunteers gathered to support the 12th annual “Heat’s On Water’s Off” event in late September. The Mechanical Contractors Association of Metropolitan Washington (MCAMW) Service Bureau, Plumbers Local 5, Steamfitters Local 602, and other volunteers worked to improve selected homes in Prince George’s County, Md., just in time for winter.

MCAMW is an organization of union mechanical construction and service industry workers who do maintenance in plumbing, heating, and air conditioning. The association organized the volunteers to help fix 27 homes that were selected by Prince George’s Department of Family Services.

After being assigned a home to repair, volunteers spent their day replacing and repairing things such as faucets, toilets, and other plumbing and heating systems. Suppliers who supported the event included Furgenson Enterprises Inc., Aireco Supply Inc., Kingswell Inc., and Washington Winnelson Co. The local fire department also participated and installed smoke detectors and carbon monoxide sensors.

Steve Mack, chairman of MCAMW, said, “Every year at least one life is saved because of ‘Heat’s On Water’s Off.’”
