CHICAGO - There’s no doubt there were fewer new products on display in the unitary sector at the 2009 International Air-Conditioning, Heating, Refrigerating Exposition (AHR Expo). That could be due to the fact that most manufacturers just recently rolled out their new products in response to the 13 SEER mandate, but another reason may be that many of the large unitary manufacturers were not represented at the AHR Expo. Those that were there highlighted their new products that are energy efficient and utilize R-410A.

Energy Saving Products(www.hi-velocity.com) featured its new mini-duct Hi-Velocity heating and air conditioning system. Company CEO Leon Prevost said that unlike conventional heating and cooling systems that cycle on and off on demand, Hi-Velocity Systems can run constantly and quietly even when the system is not producing hot or cold air. This constant air movement, which is delivered by small diameter, flexible ducts, creates a gentle fresh airflow throughout the entire house. Prevost said this system requires fewer outlets than other mini-duct systems and is more cost effective. In addition, its air purification system provides a high level of IAQ.

Heat Controller(www.heatcontroller.com) introduced its 13 and 14 SEER condensing units and heat pumps that utilize R-410A. The Century 14 SEER heat pump is available in sizes ranging from 1.5 to 5 tons and features long life copper coils with enhanced aluminum fins to provide maximum heat exchange for the greatest efficiency. The unit also comes with a 12-year compressor and parts warranty. Century R-410A condensing units feature a louvered metal jacket and scroll compressors. Spokesperson LeeAnne Perkins said that matching air handlers are also available.

Nordyne(www.nordyne.com) featured its iQ Drive, which is available in 2-, 3-, and 4-ton capacities under the brand names of Maytag, Frigidaire, NuTone, Tappan, and Westinghouse. The 24.5 SEER split system air conditioners utilize the iQ Drive, which is an inverter-driven rotary compressor that provides fully variable operation. It reacts to the cooling demand and changes the system capacity by modulating the speed of the compressor and motors. This results in efficient operation over a wide range of conditions without cycling on and off in the conventional manner. The air conditioners utilize R-410A and carry Nordyne’s ecoLogic™ green seal.

Robur(www.robur.com/us) displayed its new GAHP-A gas-fired absorption heat pump. This heating-only system provides 129 percent heat efficiency at nominal conditions and can produce hot water up to 140°F and heating capacities of up to 123,500 Btuh. Spokesperson Brian Cullinane said the units are easy to install and do not require any interior space, as they are designed for outside installation. No flue is required, and the heat pump is ideal for applications that require a highly efficient gas-fired appliance.

Leon Cogswell shows off Heat Controller’s new condensing units and heat pumps that now contain R-410A.

Samsung(www.quietside.com) featured its new Smart Inverter ducted systems. These systems offer flexible installation with a slim, compact size and the option to place the air inlet either on the bottom or rear of the unit.

The Smart Pressure Control provides cool air regardless of the surrounding environment. The Smart Inverter systems feature flexible installation, easy maintenance, and low noise levels. Versatility is also a benefit, as the location of the indoor units, as well as the supply and return registers, can be selected to best suit the installation and room layout.

Bard Manufacturing Co.(www.bardhvac.com) is celebrating its 95th year in business in 2009 and is also rolling out its new R-410A offerings. Company representative Pam Bard Steel said the AHR Expo was a great place to highlight the company’s flagship line of wall-mount air conditioners, gas/electric units, and heat pumps that now use R-410A. The wall-mount units are self-contained, energy-efficient systems that are designed to offer maximum indoor comfort at a minimal cost. The units are ideal for schools, portable structures, and modular offices.
