The freewatt™ home heating system operates using micro-combined heat and power (micro-CHP) technology, which marries an Energy Star-rated, high-efficiency natural gas furnace or boiler to a Honda generator. When there is a demand for heat in the home, the system runs, burning natural gas. The heat energy is first used to produce electricity and then it is used to heat the home. The electric power is generated with the micro-CHP technology, which is 83-90 percent efficient. This electricity can be used to power the home or can be sold back to the grid. According to the manufacturer, by utilizing natural gas, the electricity the system produces is greener than electricity produced by coal-generated power plants. Utilizing freewatt may help residential projects qualify for points under the Leadership in Energy and Environmental Design (LEED) for Homes Rating System.
