Gargaro's World: Picking a Second in Command

Since the Democratic Primary is now over, all the talk is about whom Sen. Barack Obama and Sen. John McCain will choose as running mates. Before we go any further, I just want to say that if nominated I will not run, and if elected I will not serve.

Laugh all you want, but considering Dick Cheney has lowered the bar on vice presidential candidates to those who do not shoot their friends in the face, at this point very few individuals have been eliminated.

In my uneducated guess, McCain will pick someone like Mitt Romney because he needs some help on the economy (don’t we all).

Also, I could see Obama asking someone like Joe Biden to help the Democratic ticket with some foreign relations experience. I thought I would get my three readers to weigh in and give these candidates a hand.

Not in suggesting whom to choose (although you are more than welcome to do that), but rather in advice as to how one goes about picking a No. 2.

I assume most who own a business have a second-in-command - somebody to bounce ideas off of, someone to help you keep in touch with the morale of the workers, someone to cover for you when you vacation for the entire month of August in Texas.

So please share your thoughts.

Hopefully, your VP is better at speaking than former Vice President Dan Quayle, who once said: “One word sums up probably the responsibility of any vice president, and that one word is ‘to be prepared.’”
