OBJECTIVE:Create an entirely new and stable renewable energy system for downtown Honolulu.
DESCRIPTION:In an effort to reduce dependency on oil and decrease the instability of yearly energy bills, multiple businesses in downtown Honolulu are investing in a seawater district cooling system. Started in 2003, this 12-phase project is nearing completion as the projected December 2008 groundbreaking approaches. As of September 2007, 51 percent of the new system’s 25,000-ton capacity has been committed to specific customers, 14 percent is anticipating commitment before the end of the year, and 35 percent is still available. According to Honolulu Seawater Air Conditioning LLC, the seawater system will guarantee stable rates for 25 years, require less dependence on foreign oil, provide new jobs, and contribute to a cleaner environment.
