Solomon Holtzin, CMS, Past International President of the Refrigeration Service Engineers Society (RSES) International, died Feb. 21. He was 86. He was RSES International president in 1981; he oversaw the building of the society’s headquarters in Des Plaines, Ill.

“My role was to be the driving whip of the project and I enjoyed it immensely, in spite of the fact that I suffered a heart attack in 1982 and had to undergo quadruple bypass surgery,” Mr. Holtzin said in 2003.

He also was on the RSES Educational and Examining Board and the Manufacturers Service Advisory Council. Mr. Holtzin joined RSES in 1957 and became a CM in 1963. He was a World War II veteran.

Family, friends, RSES members, and industry representatives honored Mr. Holtzin last autumn for his involvement in the HVACR industry. “Sol, in all his working years, gave unselfishly of his time to elevate the skills and knowledge of countless technicians,” wrote Jack Hasick of Calgary, Alberta. “This chapter has been blessed and honored with a person who had given so much of himself in the interest of others,” stated the Delaware Valley Chapter. “Thanks, Sol.”

Mr. Holtzin was survived by his wife, Mary Ann (Peckerman); daughter, Renee Bernett; son, Stephen; and grandchildren Deena and Melissa Bernett.
