WASHINGTON, DC — According to estimates from the U.S. Census Bureau, housing starts in January were at a seasonally adjusted annual rate of 1,678,000, which is 6% above the revised December estimate of 1,579,000 and is 1% above the January 2001 rate of 1,666,000.

Housing units authorized by building permits in January were at a seasonally adjusted annual rate of 1,706,000, which is 3% above the revised December rate of 1,654,000, but is 1% below the January 2001 estimate of 1,724,000.

Single-family housing starts in January 2002 were at a rate of 1,345,000; this is 4% above the revised December figure of 1,299,000. Single-family permit authorizations in January were at a rate of 1,329,000; this is 7% above the revised December figure of 1,247,000.
