The 2002 Winter Olympic Games in Salt Lake City, UT, made extensive use of distributed generation, employing 350 portable generators to supply 100 MW of power for such functions as security, broadcasting, timing/results, and information technology. Aggreko LLC (Houston, TX) had a 107-member team installing power systems at the Olympic sites for 18 months.

Although many of the Aggreko systems provided backup power for utility-powered systems, the company said that most of the Olympic venues were run by temporary power generation systems.
