October 5, 2009: Chillers and the Phaseout: What Contractors Should Expect

13 years ago when CFCs were phased out, commercial building owners and managers had to make the decision whether to keep their existing chillers that used refrigerant such as R-11 or invest in equipment containing HCFCs such as R-22. Now that HCFCs are being phased out, owners and managers are faced with the same decision: keep their current equipment and most likely pay higher premiums on refrigerant in the future, or move to chillers using HFC refrigerants such as R-134a or R-410A.

August 24 , 2009: Training Track: R-410A

Many manufacturers have had R-410A equipment available for years, and they ’ve also offered training opportunities so that their dealers and distributors would know how to safely handle the new refrigerant. In just a few short months, equipment containing R-22 will no longer be produced, and manufacturers want industry personnel to know that they are still providing training opportunities on R-410A.

June 22, 2009: Phaseout Provides Contractors with Opportunities to Go Green

But the truth is, many contractors are already a little green, even if they don’t want to admit it. How couldn’t they be? These are the people who have been talking with customers about energy efficiency years before it came into vogue.

April 20, 2009: Capturing the Refrigerant Myths

Installing and servicing air conditioning systems with new refrigerants isn't mystical science, but there are many myths associated with R-410A. How are R-410A and R-22 so different? Why aren't more units being changed out at this point? What is getting in the way of this transition?

February 9, 2009: It's More than New Gas

What is happening with the supply and demand for R-22 and R-410A changes everything about your business. You may only see the new refrigerant as the tip of the iceberg, but most of the changes for your business lie beneath the surface. Many contractors are slow to adopt the new refrigerant, clinging on to R-22 for as long as is humanly possible. However, those that understand the timeline from 2010 through 2030 have already begun to make preparations for their future, and the future of their customers.
