A new global chiller engineering and manufacturing group has been formed in Montreal with the merger of the Australian PowerPax chiller business with its North American Smardt sister company, creating the new Smardt Chiller Group.

Most LEED-Certified Buildings Save Energy, But Not All
According to a report from the National Research Council of Canada, on average Leadership in Energy and Environmental Design (LEED)-certified buildings used 18-39 percent less energy per floor area than conventional buildings. However, 28-35 percent of LEED buildings used more energy than conventional buildings.

Ductless Shipments Showed Largest Increase in Fourth Quarter 2008
The Heating, Refrigeration and Air Conditioning Institute of Canada (HRAI) reported that several product sectors had increased shipments in the last quarter of 2008. During the fourth quarter, ductless splits shipments showed the largest gain, increasing by 36 percent.

Homeowners Can Save Energy, Money Through Grant Program and Tax Credits
On March 30, the Canadian Minister of Natural Resources announced that for a limited time, grants under the ecoENERGY – Retrofit Homes program will increase by 25 percent. Homeowners who retrofit their homes to make them more energy efficient could also qualify for the government of Canada’s new Home Renovation Tax Credit.

ECR Consolidates Furnace and Air Conditioner Manufacturing
ECR International has announced plans to consolidate production at its factories in Utica and Dunkirk, N.Y. CEO Mike Paparone said the company plans to shift production from ECR plants in Rome, N.Y., and Wallaceburg, Ontario, to its factories in Utica and Dunkirk.

Industry Forecast Predicts Shipments Decrease
The Heating, Refrigeration and Air Conditioning Institute of Canada’s (HRAI’s) annual statistics forecast for 2009 projects that commercial air conditioning shipments will decrease by 2 percent, residential air conditioning will decrease by 5 percent, and residential furnace shipments will decrease by 6 percent.

Jack Hasick Passes
Jack Hasick, 84, passed away Nov. 7, 2008, surrounded by family at the Southwood Hospice. During his 50-plus-year career in the HVACR industry, Hasick was involved with many organizations, such as the Refrigeration Service Engineers Society (RSES), where he became International President.

The Heating, Refrigeration and Air Conditioning Institute of Canada (HRAI) notes that individuals who hold a SkillTech Academy Certification Wallet Card with an expiration date of Dec. 31, 2008 have less than four weeks left to apply for recertification.

Ductless Split Shipments Increase
During the third quarter of 2008, ductless split systems showed the largest gain in shipments, increasing by 27 percent, according to the Heating, Refrigeration and Air Conditioning Institute of Canada (HRAI). Chiller bookings showed the second largest gain, increasing by 22 percent.
