New Global Chiller Group Formed

A new global chiller engineering and manufacturing group has been formed in Montreal with the merger of the Australian PowerPax chiller business with its North American Smardt sister company, creating the new Smardt Chiller Group.


HRAI Announces Appointments, Awards

Customers of Manitoba Hydro who replace their old natural gas furnace or boiler with a new Energy Star-qualified high-efficiency furnace or boiler can receive a $245 rebate up until Nov. 1


CIPHEX Takes Its Trade Show on the Road

CIPHEX is back on the road this fall with a series of trade shows across western Canada. The 2009 Roadshow kicks off in Winnipeg, Manitoba, on Oct. 22; then appears in Saskatoon, Saskatchewan, on Oct. 27; Regina, Saskatchewan, on Oct. 29; Edmonton, Alberta, on Nov. 3; with the final stop in Vancouver, British Columbia, on Nov. 5.


Aggreko Continues Canadian Expansion

Aggreko, a leader in rental power, rental heating and cooling, and rental compressed air solutions, announced that it is continuing its strategy for growth in Canada with the addition of a new location in Fort McMurray, Alberta.


CHC and AHAC Merge Member Services

The Canadian Hydronics Council (CHC) and the Alberta Hydronics Advisory Council (AHAC) announced that they have signed a memorandum of understanding (MOU) that will allow CHC to take over AHAC’s membership services.

Most LEED-Certified Buildings Save Energy, But Not All

According to a report from the National Research Council of Canada, on average Leadership in Energy and Environmental Design (LEED)-certified buildings used 18-39 percent less energy per floor area than conventional buildings. However, 28-35 percent of LEED buildings used more energy than conventional buildings.


Ductless Split System Shipments Only Area to Have Increase in First Quarter

During the first quarter of 2009, ductless split system shipments were the only product sector to show a gain, increasing by 24 percent, according to the Heating, Refrigeration and Air Conditioning Institute of Canada (HRAI). Other sectors showed decreases.


Sustainable Building Centre in Ontario Founded

TAB Mechanical Inc. and Batawa Development Corp., both of Batawa, Ontario, have established the Eastern Ontario Sustainable Building Centre (EOSBC) in Batawa. The green ribbon-cutting ceremony occurred on April 18.


Ductless Shipments Showed Largest Increase in Fourth Quarter 2008

The Heating, Refrigeration and Air Conditioning Institute of Canada (HRAI) reported that several product sectors had increased shipments in the last quarter of 2008. During the fourth quarter, ductless splits shipments showed the largest gain, increasing by 36 percent.

On March 30, the Canadian Minister of Natural Resources announced that for a limited time, grants under the ecoENERGY – Retrofit Homes program will increase by 25 percent. NSF Certifies First Geothermal Pipes to New Canadian Standard

NSF International, a public health and safety organization, announced that it has certified the first geothermal pipes to Canadian Standards Association (CSA) standard C448: Design and Installation of Earth Energy Systems for Commercial and Institutional Buildings.

REGEN Energy announced that it has released the EnviroGrid™ Smart Grid Bundle. According to the company, its EnviroGrid intelligent wireless controllers provide a swarm-logic approach to managing electrical loads such as HVAC in facilities, reducing peak electrical demand without affecting occupant comfort.


ECR Consolidates Furnace and Air Conditioner Manufacturing

ECR International has announced plans to consolidate production at its factories in Utica and Dunkirk, N.Y. CEO Mike Paparone said the company plans to shift production from ECR plants in Rome, N.Y., and Wallaceburg, Ontario, to its factories in Utica and Dunkirk.

Industry Forecast Predicts Shipments Decrease

The Heating, Refrigeration and Air Conditioning Institute of Canada’s (HRAI’s) annual statistics forecast for 2009 projects that commercial air conditioning shipments will decrease by 2 percent, residential air conditioning will decrease by 5 percent, and residential furnace shipments will decrease by 6 percent.


Jack Hasick Passes

Jack Hasick, 84, passed away Nov. 7, 2008, surrounded by family at the Southwood Hospice. During his 50-plus-year career in the HVACR industry, Hasick was involved with many organizations, such as the Refrigeration Service Engineers Society (RSES), where he became International President.


SkillTech Renewal Required

The Heating, Refrigeration and Air Conditioning Institute of Canada (HRAI) notes that individuals who hold a SkillTech Academy Certification Wallet Card with an expiration date of Dec. 31, 2008 have less than four weeks left to apply for recertification.


Ductless Split Shipments Increase

During the third quarter of 2008, ductless split systems showed the largest gain in shipments, increasing by 27 percent, according to the Heating, Refrigeration and Air Conditioning Institute of Canada (HRAI). Chiller bookings showed the second largest gain, increasing by 22 percent.


HRAI President Makes Appointment

Warren Heeley, president of the Heating, Refrigeration and Air Conditioning Institute of Canada (HRAI), appointed Dorothy Allen to the HRAI staff. Allen joins HRAI as member services representative for the Contractors Division (HRAC) and Associates Division.


Johnson Controls Appoints Controls Contractor

Controlsys Enterprise, Brossard, Quebec, announced that Johnson Controls, Milwaukee, appointed independent controls contractor, DHC Automation & Controls, Ottawa, as an Authorized Building Controls Specialist (ABCS).


IGA Has First Canadian LEED-Certified Supermarket

Canada’s first Leadership In Energy and Environmental Design (LEED)-certified supermarket is a showcase of green, sustainable HVACR technologies, including solar heating, heat recovery, high efficiency compressor rack refrigeration, and secondary glycol loop heat reclamation.
